Re-Constructing Asian-ness(es) in the Global Age

This new millennium foresees the coming of New Asia-Pacific era. The word ‘Paradigm shift’ has been long talked about and heard. In relation to the concept of ‘old’ Asia, how do we, then, re-construct Asian-ness(es) as we see us and as others see us in this new age?
How do tradition, modernity and post-modernity intersect with Asian-ness(es) in all their different levels and configurations? How are such cross-cultural convergences and differences translated into theatre and performance in theory and practice as well as in theatre education?

Relatively speaking, whereas in the West, tradition, modernity and post-modernity have developed sequentially, for many Asian countries including Korea these different socio-cultural phases seem to happen and co-exist simultaneously. After all, for many Asian countries, modernity and post-modernity are Western cultural ideologies, which began to be introduced around the beginning of the 20th century and the post World War II period respectively.
The accommodation of these different cultural ideologies within Asian societies coevally has prompted multiple and complex cultural encounters and clashes within different sectors of the respective societies.

The IFTR 2008 conference aims to examine, learn, and bring to discussion how different theatre traditions of East and West come to play for, against, amongst each other to transform and re-create their respective new ones, ultimately in order to enrich and reinforce Theatre as an important cultural asset of the global community.

The conference theme will include the following related topics:
  1. Religion and Theatre
  2. New media and Theatre
  3. Adaptation and Appropriation
  4. Cultural Translation
  5. Asian and Transnational Women’s Issues in Performance.
  6. Spatial Issues in Performance.
  7. Corporeality and Representation in Performance.
  8. Festivals as sites of performance.
  9. Concepts of Asian-ness in Cyberspace.

Please note:
Individuals who feel that the conference theme does not appeal to them, can of course still submit a proposal to one of the many Working Groups. The Working Groups are not bound by the theme of a conference, and have their own themes and ways of working. For details, contact the Convener of the particular Working Group you are interested in.
